CHURCH
OF THE HOLY SPIRIT, CATHOLIC CHURCH Sometime in the early
1920's, Rev. E. J. Clinton came from Happy to say Mass in the Verhey
home. Those attending were Mr. and Mrs. Jake Spitzinger, Mr. and
Mrs. Tom Hickman, Mr. and Mrs. Adolph Schulte, Mr. and Mrs.
Joe Rossi, the Louis Rossis, the Marvin Nobles, Mrs. Josephine Black,
the Grossmans from Kress, Mr. Pete Stark from Claytonville, Mrs.
Jess Lockhart, and sister from Silverton, and Mrs. Magness.
In 1950, plans were made to build a church in Tulia. Elmer Kleman
donated land. Urban Kleman and Loyd Hamilton were building contractors,
with the men from the church donating their time. The Catholic Extension
Society assisted in financing the church. The church was named St.
Williams. It was dedicated by Bishop Fitzsimon on August 22, 1951.

Mr. and Mrs. Mark Anderwald, Mr. and Mrs. Mike Huber, Mr. and Mrs.
Henry Beckman, Mr. and Mrs. Dewey Bryant, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Irlbeck,
Mr. and Mrs. Ben Luera, and the AI Chapas.
Doris Huber and Don George, Carolyn Schulte and Jimmy Dietz, were
married a week after the new church was dedicated. Maureen Pohlmeir
was the first baby baptized in St. Williams. Tulia was still a mission
of Happy with the Priest living in Happy and coming to Tulia on
Sundays.
In 1956, Father Binversie was pastor of the two
